Managing File Self-Destruct Timers (TTL)
Every file in UltraLocked has a self-destruct timer, also known as Time-To-Live (TTL). When this timer expires, the file is permanently and securely deleted. You can change this timer for any file at any time.
What is a Self-Destruct Timer?
The self-destruct timer is a core security feature of UltraLocked. It ensures that sensitive data does not persist on your device forever, protecting you from future compromise or accidental discovery.
- The timer starts from the moment the file is created or imported.
- When the timer reaches zero, the file's encryption key is destroyed and the file's data is overwritten, making recovery impossible.
How to Change a File's Timer
You can adjust the timer for any individual file.
In List View:
- Find the file in your vault.
- Tap the Ellipsis (...) icon on the right side of the row.
- Select "Change Expiration".
- Choose a new duration from the list (e.g., 5 Minutes, 24 Hours, 1 Year).
In Grid View:
- Long-press on the file's thumbnail to bring up the context menu.
- Select "Change Expiration".
- Choose a new duration.
While Viewing a File:
- When viewing an image, video, or document, tap the screen to show the controls.
- Tap the Ellipsis (...) menu icon.
- Select "Change Expiration" and choose a new duration.
Setting the Default Timer
You can change the default self-destruct timer for all new files you add to the vault.
- Navigate to Settings.
- Under the "Preferences" section, tap on "Default Self-Destruct Timer".
- Select a new default duration.
This setting will apply to all files added via the Secure Camera, Secure Notes, or the Share Extension from that point forward.
