Choosing Your Security Level

Your Security Level determines which factors are required to unlock your vault. You can change this at any time in Settings > Security Level. We recommend Enhanced Security for most users.

UltraLocked offers multiple levels of security so you can balance convenience and protection based on your personal threat model.

Standard Security

  • Factors: Biometrics (Face ID/Touch ID) + Device Security Checks.
  • Best for: Users who prioritize quick, convenient access and whose primary threat is casual snooping or device loss.
  • How it works: Unlocking your vault is as fast as unlocking your phone. The app also runs background checks to ensure your device hasn't been obviously tampered with. No PIN is required.

Enhanced Security (Recommended)

  • Factors: Biometrics + Device Security Checks + PIN Backup.
  • Best for: The majority of users. It provides the speed of biometrics with the robust backup of a PIN.
  • How it works: You'll primarily use biometrics to unlock. However, if biometrics fail or are unavailable, you can use your main PIN to access the vault. This also enables the powerful Duress Code feature.

Maximum Security

  • Factors: All factors, including Biometrics, PIN, Device Security, and context-based checks like trusted locations or time-of-day restrictions.
  • Best for: Users with extreme threat models, such as journalists, activists, or executives handling highly sensitive information.
  • How it works: This level enforces the strictest possible access policies. For example, you could configure your vault to only be accessible from your home or office during specific business hours.

Changing Your Level

You can upgrade or downgrade your security level at any time from the settings menu. If you upgrade to a level that requires a PIN and you haven't set one up, you will be prompted to create one.
