Troubleshooting
I Forgot My PIN. What Are My Options?
If you have biometrics (Face ID/Touch ID) enabled and your security level is not set to 'Maximum', you may be able to reset your PIN. Otherwise, for security reasons, there is no way to recover a forgotten PIN, and your data is permanently inaccessible.
UltraLocked is designed with a zero-knowledge architecture, meaning we have no access to your PIN or your encryption keys. This provides incredible security, but it also means our ability to help with a forgotten PIN is intentionally limited.
Scenario 1: Recovery is Possible
You may be able to reset your PIN if you meet all of the following conditions:
- You have Face ID or Touch ID enabled on your device.
- You have enabled biometric authentication within UltraLocked.
- Your Security Level in UltraLocked is set to Standard or Enhanced, but NOT Maximum.
If you meet these criteria, you will see a "Forgot PIN?" option after a few failed attempts. Tapping this will guide you through a secure recovery process that uses your biometrics to authorize a PIN reset.
Scenario 2: Recovery is Not Possible
For security reasons, PIN recovery is impossible if any of the following are true:
- You do not have Face ID or Touch ID set up on your device.
- You have disabled biometric authentication within UltraLocked.
- Your Security Level is set to Maximum.
🚨 Permanent Data Loss by Design
If you cannot recover your PIN, your encrypted data is permanently and irretrievably lost. There is no "master key" or backdoor that we can use to help you. The only option is to delete and reinstall the app, which will factory reset your vault and allow you to start over.
This is a fundamental security feature, not a flaw. It guarantees that no one—not even us—can access your vault without your credentials.
